A first note, to introduce myself. Joe Murphy: an old, straight, cisgendered white man. Even so, I have been active in the fight for the acceptance of LGBTQ folks since the seventies, when I was a pastor serving a congregation in the United Church of Christ in Montana. After more than thirty years serving the church, I made the transition to living a secular life, with only limited involvement in the church.
One thing you will hear from me often is my concern for the ways in which the Christian church and traditional interpretations of the Bible have been misused to justify bigotry and hatred for LGBTQ folks and their friends and families. Although I am not an academic scholar of the Bible, I have become all too familiar with the arguments quoting Leviticus, the letters of Paul and other parts of the Bible out of context to marginalize sexual minorities. I intend for my first entries on this site to be about how those ways of using the Bible are mistaken, and to suggest ways to argue against them.
I do hope that those of you who have questions or concerns related to faith, the Bible, and how our beliefs have consequences will comment, so we can have a healthy discussion. I look forward to hearing from you.
